Castor Oil Packs:

Needed Supplies

  • High-quality castor oil (hexane free) – New Seasons Carries- Some Fred Meyers do in natural section. I recommend finding a brand that is ok for internal use.

  • Unbleached and dye free wool or cotton flannel (appx 2ft x 5ft)- An old flannel pillow case, spilt along the long seam works great!

  • Plastic wrap (not optimal), an Old Towel, or a “wrap around pack”- Google “Radiant Life”

  • Hot water bottle or heating pad

  • Glass container with lid – I use a quart size mason jar (for storing the oil soaked flannel between uses) Can also use a plastic bag

  • Old clothes, towels and sheets – castor oil does stain

How to Do A Castor Oil Pack

I highly recommend prepping the area where you’ll be doing the castor oil pack to prevent messes.

Before Beginning:

  • Make sure your piece of flannel is large enough to wrap all the way around your body.

  • Heat up a water bottle, and have on hand.

  • Gather old sheets and towel- Make sure this towel is large enough to wrap all the way around your body and stay securely tucked there.

  • Get a jar, large enough for flannel to fit inside

One Method:

  1. Place an old towel flat on bed or floor- If on bed, be aware that Castor Oil may stain your sheets if it touches them.

  2. Place your Flannel cloth flat, on top of towel

  3. Lie yourself down on towel and flannel cloth

  4. Rub Castor Oil between palms, and rub into your abdomen in counter clockwise direction- this is the direction your large intestine travels (Up on Right, across the top, then down on left- this is the direction of your large intestine)

  5. Wipe Excess Castor oil into flannel, then wrap flannel around your body

  6. Wrap towel around body and flannel wrap

  7. Place hot water bottle on top of towel, or between layers of towel, to acheive desired warmth level

  8. Let sit for 30-60min- There is no harm in falling asleep with the pack and pulling it off in the morning.

  9. After desired time, remove the pack and return the flannel to the glass container. Store in fridge.

  10. Use a natural soap or a mix of baking soda and water to remove any castor oil left on the skin.

Another Method:

  1. Soak Cloth in Castor Oil in a jar, carefully remove, and fold into desired size square.

  2. While lying on an old towel or sheet, place the cloth on the desired body part.

  3. Cover with plastic (like a plastic trash bag), or the wrap around pack, and place the heating pack on top of this. A hot water bottle, electric heating pad or rice heating pad can be used, but hot water bottles and rice packs may need to be reheated several times.

  4. Lie on back with feet elevated (I typically lie on the floor and rest my feet on the couch), and relax for 30-60 minutes.

  5. Use this time to practice deep breathing, read a book, meditate or pray (or whatever you find relaxing).

  6. After 30-60min, remove the pack and return the flannel to the glass container. Store in fridge.

  7. Use a natural soap or a mix of baking soda and water to remove any castor oil left on the skin.

  8. Relax and rest. Make sure to drink enough water and stay hydrated after doing this.
